A Very Impressive Backsplash Made of Wine Corks
Our Facebook fan, Shelly T., posted this pic on our Facebook wall yesterday. Yes, that’s her backsplash! She said it took 40 hours to install, but it looks amazing! We’ve asked Shelly to give us some more details about her project…
“My husband made me a “jig” for the band saw…out of 1″ copper tubing. I cut all the corks in 1/2 lengthways (twice the corks that way). Took my time so I could saw them with wording on them. Did the saw work over the course of a few days…actually easy and fast.
Bought a large glue gun and glue sticks. Broke 2 glue guns and was on my 3rd. Started the curve design first on each area I was glueing. Used a kitchen shears (not a scissors!!) to cut the angled wine corks to fit. This was my first big project–my husband said “do whatever you want”. Yayy!! New counter and sink and faucet (everything before was white-UUGHH!).
I still need to put a sealant over the corks. Randy the “kitchen guy” at our local store suggested a water-based Polyurethane. I bought a quart today and I am going to try it on a sample I plan on making.
Words of warning-hot glue burns are the worst!! Definitely have cool water nearby-my fingers were covered! And the shears will make your hands very sore. Glad you like it-I LOVE IT!” –Shelly T.
If you have any questions for Shelly on this big project, post them in the comments or on our Facebook page!
