Wine 101: Spring in the Vineyard

It’s spring & Napa Valley vines are coming to life! In early March, tiny shoots break through on the vines (bud break.) The bright yellow mustard plants are almost gone and the vines are finally showing their small green leaves.

Vineyard managers keep a close watch on their vines at this time of year – the weather can be unpredictable and frost can damage or kill these small shoots. Some of our vineyard managers hear the frost sirens and head to the vineyard in the middle of the night, sleeping in their trucks!

Now is the time the vineyard workers get in the vineyard and start pruning, tying and prepping the vines, ensuring the flourishing vines will get the optimal sunlight and air circulation throughout the growing season.
