Sangria Slush by Author Mary McNear
As summer entertaining season begins, Mary McNear, author of this month’s Sutter Home Book Club selection, Moonlight on Butternut Lake, believes that a simple potluck approach is key to a successful gathering. We’re particularly looking to serving her refreshing twist on Sutter Home Sangria, and have already spotted the perfect pitcher.
“May is the perfect month to fire up the grill again! Here on Butternut Lake we like to keep things simple. We provide the wine and the burgers, and we ask our friends to bring side dishes and desserts.
My husband and I love spicy dishes and they’ve come to know this. Over the years, our friends have brought some great side dishes, including spicy dill potato salad, corning pudding with hot peppers, and jalapeno mac and cheese.
Of course, Sangria is perfect with these dishes – its sweetness balances their spiciness. And one of my favorite ways to drink Sangria is as a frozen slush! My easy-peasy recipe is below. Happy grilling from your friends on Butternut Lake!
Sangria Slush
INGREDIENTS
3 cups Sutter Home Sangria
1 ½ cups orange juice
¼ cup lemon juice
1 cup fresh pineapple
½ cup sugar (optional)
DIRECTIONS
Blend all ingredients (including the sugar, if you like) until well mixed. Pour into a pitcher, and place in freezer until slushy. Stir with a spoon. Garnish with fresh fruit and serve.
