June Book Club: All the Summer Girls

The votes from Facebook are in and the Harper Collins and Sutter Book Club read for June is All the Summer Girls by Meg Donohue. A perfect summer read, the novel illustrates the secrets, irritations and bonds that an old friendship harbors. Our book club can’t wait to dive into the book, but first we must plan the book club meeting. Here are some fun event-planning tips the we’ve learned along the way.

Send Creative Invites

Let your club know where and when your meeting will be held in a fun way. If you’re super crafty, whip up a beach-themed message in a bottle invitation or, if crafts aren’t your forte, go digital and send an e-vite with your favorite quote from the book or conjure up memories of sand, sun, and the Fourth of July.

Unplug your Gathering

Collect cellphones and other devices at the door to remove any distractions. All the Summer Girls is all about regrouping, in-person, with friends – structure your book club meeting accordingly!

Build a Discussion Guide

While writing up your discussion questions remember that All the Summer Girls Is about reconnecting with friends, remembering the past and understanding each other’s present. Don’t feel the need to just stick to questions about the book, mix in a few questions about everyone’s lives.

Create a Memorable Menu

Donohue writes, “Dani and her father and friends would grill fish on the deck overlooking the beach, and eat together under the stars.” Create a similar setting by serving grilled salmon with mango salsa. Find the recipe here (link to recipe on Sutter Home Website)!.

Plan a Pairing

With a fresh and crisp flavor, Sutter Home Chardonnay is the perfect wine pairing for both grilled salmon as well as the warm summer feelings evoked by the novel.
