The Band O.A.R. Doesn’t Simply Perform Songs, They Share Rich Short Stories

The Band O.A.R. Doesn’t Simply Perform Songs, They Share Rich Short Stories

O.A.R. is a down-to-earth, American rock band with a soulful heart as big as their sound. Although their name stands for (Of a Revolution), instead of a revolution, their lyrics more suggest peace-and-love and idealism.

Members of O.A.R. include founder and lead vocalist/guitarist Marc Roberge, drummer Chris Culos, guitarist Richard On, bassist Benj Gershman, and saxophonist/guitarist Jerry DePizzo.

Though O.A.R. has a reputation for being a jam band like the Grateful Dead, Phish, and the Dave Matthews Band, that doesn’t jive with their songs, which are more like short stories with minimum detours into heavy solos, or long jams.

However, like the Grateful Dead, Phish, and the Dave Matthews Band, O.A.R. created their own success by cultivating a loyal audience through word-of-mouth, nonstop touring, and by inviting fans to record their live concerts in the hope they’d share them freely. The fans did!

In May 2016, the band announced the release of a career-spanning compilation to coincide with their 20th anniversary. You’d never know they’ve been doing it for two decades because they’re not jaded, and it’s clear when talking to them that they feel lucky to do what they love every day, and to have all their fans still supporting them.
