Sutter Home Family Vineyards celebrates the 25th Anniversary of the Sutter Home Build a Better Burger® Recipe Contest.

25th Anniversary, $25,000 Grand Prize, 25 Recipes in 25 Minutes or Less, and 25 Years of Celebrating America’s Favorite Food and Wine Pairing.

St. Helena, Calif., February 19, 2015 – Sutter Home Family Vineyards celebrates the 25th Anniversary of the Sutter Home Build a Better Burger® Recipe Contest and is proud to reveal the 2014 finalists.

Originally founded in 1890, the Sutter Home Winery was closed during Prohibition, and reopened by the Trinchero family in 1948. Still family-owned today, Sutter Home is proud to be an American success story and a household name for American wine lovers. In 1990, Sutter Home uncorked the wine industry’s first major recipe contest: Sutter Home Build a Better Burger® Recipe Contest. By pairing one of America’s favorite wines with America’s favorite food—the burger—Sutter Home helps to demystify the challenge of pairing wine with food and encourages everyday cooks to create their own recipes and pairings. For the past 25 years, over 10,000 Sutter Home fans have submitted their original and creative recipes for a chance to win.

“Whichever food trend you embrace, the burger has long been one of America’s favorite meals,” says Wendy Nyberg, vice president of marketing for Sutter Home. “We encourage everyday cooks to find inspiration from their favorite foods and regional influences. For the 2014 Sutter Home Build a Better Burger® Recipe Contest, burgers will be judged on taste, creativity, ease of preparation, and availability of ingredients.”

The judging for the 2014 Sutter Home Build a Better Burger® Recipe Contest is currently wrapping up and on Thursday, May 14th, 2015, five finalists’ recipes from around the country will compete for $25,000. Each of the 2014 finalists’ burgers will be prepared by Sutter Home’s culinary team and tasted by a panel of judges at the Trinchero Family Estates’ hospitality center in St. Helena, Calif. The winning recipes and prizes will be announced on the Sutter Home Build a Better Burger® website and Facebook page on or about May 25, 2015. Voting for the People’s Choice Award will take place on Sutterhome.com, beginning on April 1, 2015.

In addition to the $25,000 grand prize, $15,000 will be awarded to the first runner-up and $10,000 will go to the winner of the People’s Choice Award for the 2014 Sutter Home Build a Better Burger® Recipe Contest.

Since the contest began in 1990, the creativity shown by innovative cooks throughout America has been impressive. As the 2014 contest comes to a close, casual cooks around the nation will have the opportunity to enter the 2015 Sutter Home Build a Better Burger® Recipe Contest, which opens March 30th, 2015 and will run through September 8th, 2015. Prizes for the 2015 contest includes a $25,000 grand prize, $5,000 for the winner of the People’s Choice Award and $1,000 towards the purchase of Weber products. Consumers can also participate in a Build a Better Burger® text-to-win sweepstakes for the chance to win $25 grocery gift cards. Click here for more information.

“In the last 25 years, we’ve tasted some mouthwatering burgers and shared memorable moments with fans across the country, awarding over $1.3 million in this trailblazing recipe contest,” says Nyberg.  “In 2015, we hope to continue inspiring creativity among contest entrants. For 2015, we’re also reaching beyond the contest to provide easy burger solutions anyone can use at home, by publishing a collection of 25 burger recipes that can be prepared in 25 minutes or less, inspired by past Build a Better finalist recipes.”

About Sutter Home

When the Trinchero family bought the Sutter Home Winery in 1948, they had a vision, a passion, and an insight into consumer tastes. In the early 1970s, Sutter Home started a trend when the company created White Zinfandel, introducing a new, sweeter flavor profile and changed the way Americans enjoyed wine by offering high-quality varietals at an affordable price. By the 1980s and 1990s, Sutter Home became a household name and the second largest independent family-run winery in the United States. In 2005, the winery was the first to produce the groundbreaking single-serve, 187ml in light-weight plastic bottles, and was one of the first wineries to produce Moscato over 60 years ago. With a fresh new label in 2013, Sutter Home continues to reflect the evolution of the brand and its consumers with 20 different varietals to choose from.
