Southeastern Massachusetts has one of the highest concentrations of Portuguese residents in the country. The cities and towns of this area are abundant with authentic Portuguese restaurants serving delicious traditional foods. Chorico, a spicy Portuguese pork sausage, is a local favorite. Marrying the tasty flavor of chorico with ground beef makes this a truly great Portuguese American burger.

Ingredients:

1 small yellow onion chopped
1/2 green pepper chopped
2 lbs. ground beef
1/2 lb. ground chorico (we prefer cortes brand)
3 hot red finger peppers
6 slices sharp cheddar cheese
6 Portuguese “pops” (rolls) split

Instructions:

Thoroughly mix onion, pepper, ground beef, and ground chorico.
Form into six patties.
Cut off tops of red peppers then slice in half lengthwise.

Preheat gas grill on high for 10 minutes.
Place patties on grill.
After 1 minute lower grill to medium heat.
Grill 3-4 minutes.
Flip patties and grill 4 more minutes.
Add cheese to patties and let cook until cheese is melted. Approximately 1 minute.
Place patties on “pop” bottoms.
Place 2 red pepper slices on each patty.
Cover with “pop” top and serve.
