Instructions

Burger… Blend walnuts in blender until ground fine, blending one cup at a time.(any extra lg nuts can be ground by hand) When finished blending, pour nuts into lg bowl and mix in bread crumbs. Add salt, blk pepper, cayenne pepper, and ginger. Stir in onion and garlic and toss all ingredients. Then add the egg being sure to mix well. After the egg is evenly spread through dry mixture add ketchup. Using hands, work all ingredients together. Put aside in fridge and begin the sweet onion topping. Topping… To carmelize the onions, first slice red onion into fairly thin slices and about 2 inches long. Sautee onion in pan with lemon juice for about 3-4 min uncovered. Now add brown sugar a little at a time(in thirds is best)mixing after each time. Add maple syrup after all sugar is in. Keep on high heat for 1 min. then turn heat to low. Simmer for about 7 min or untill onions are soft. Pour into dish and put in fridge to cool and thicken. Take burger mix out and form into patties(about 3/4 inch thick) and place on grill. Grill for approx. 7 min basting with sauce from red onions. (remember there's no meat so you only have to cook the egg) Place wheat bread on grill as well just to slightly toast and warm. Smear 1 tblspn 1000 island on bottom slice, topped with 2 slices tomato, romaine lettuce, burger, and top it off with cool, but not cold carmelized onions and top slice bread.
