Summer Smoked Burger

This is a non-traditional burger bursting with smoky flavors and a hint of heat. Although the name evokes a favorite time of year, they can be made year round. The recipe takes 30-40 minutes to prepare (depending how much wine your sipping during preparation). Once all the ingredients are added to the ground beef- one can easily form into patties & get ready to place on the grill. The grill will need to be rubbed with vegetable oil to ensure that the patties do not stick. All of my spices I buy from a mail order spice shop on the Cape.


-1 lb. of lean ground beef
-1 tsp. chili powder
-1/4 tsp. cayenne pepper
-1/2 tsp. sugar
-1 tsp. kosher salt
-1 tbsp. chipotle powder
-4 cloves finely chopped garlic
-1 chopped fresh (ripe) mango
-1 finely chopped vidalia onion
-juice of one fresh squeezed lime
-1 tsp. extra virgin olive oil
-1/2 can of unsalted & drained sweet corn
Ingredients to top burger:
-slices of smoked mozzarella
-sliced avocado
-sliced red onion
-bunch of cilantro


-Place lean ground beef in large bowl. -Add chili powder, cayenne, sugar, salt and chipotle powder & fold into beef with clean hands. -Finely chop 4 large cloves of garlic & add to mix. -Carefully slice skin off of mango & slice fruit into 4-6 halves. Add these halves to a small food processor or chopper. Be wary of the hard pit-like center & discard. Chop into small chunks. Fold mango into beef mixture. -Slice vidalia onion into halves & place in food processor until finely chopped. Fold into mix. -Cut one lime in half & squeeze both halves into beef. -Drizzle one tsp. of olive oil into beef. -Drain can of sweet corn, rinse and fold into beef- mix well. -Form into patties/ place on foil.


Cook patties about 5-6 minutes on each side for a burger that is medium rare. Slice Smoked Mozzarella & place on burger while still on grill. Toast sesame seed buns & add patty to bun. Top burger with ripe slices of avocado, slices of red onion & a hand full of fresh cilantro. You will love the combination of flavors & will have no need for runny condiments- enjoy your burger with a glass of crisp Sauvignon Blanc or a soft, lush Cabernet. CHEERS!
