Pizza Burger

I have seen many variations on mexican-style burgers, but never really saw a more Italian-style burger and I always wanted to try something that combined two of my favorite foods - pizza and hamburgers.

Ingredients 

Patties:
1 1/2 lb ground beef
1 link spicy pork Italian sausage
1 tsp coarse ground salt
1 tsp coarse ground pepper
1 tbsp Italian dressing
Toppings:
1 1/2 cup commercial marinara sauce
8 slices hard pepperoni
6 slices mozzarella cheese
Sauteed Topping:
2 green peppers, thinly sliced
1 red onion, thinly sliced
1 garlic clove, minced
2 tbsp olive oil
1 tsp coarse ground pepper
1 tsp coarse ground salt
12 pieces ciabatta bread
4 tsp butter to toast bread
Olive oil for brushing on grill rack

Instructions 

Directions: Prepare a medium-hot fire in a charcoal grill with a cover, or preheat a gas grill to medium-high. To make patties, combine beef, Italian sausage, salt, pepper and Italian dressing in a large bowl. Handling the meat as little as possible to avoid compacting it, mix well. Divide the mixture into 6 equal portions and form the portions into long oblong patties to fit the bread. Lightly butter one side of each piece of bread and set aside for toasting later. To make the sauteed topping, combine the peppers, onions, garlic, salt and pepper. Warm the olive oil in a 12-inch fireproof skillet on the grill. Add the peppers, onions, garlic, salt and pepper and sautee, stirring frequently for 15 to 20 minutes, avoid burning the garlic by moving the skillet away from the direct heat. Remove topping from grill and cover with aluminum foil to keep warm. Place the pepperoni on the grill to warm, 2 minutes per side. Set aside and cover with aluminum foil to keep warm. Brush the grill rack with oil. Place the patties on the rack and cover the grill. Cook the patties, turning once, until done to preference, 5 to 7 minutes on each side. Remove patties from the grill and stack in a metal pan and cover with aluminum foil to keep warm. While cooking the patties, in a 6-inch fireproof skillet, warm the marinara sauce. During the last few minutes of cooking, place the bread on the outer edges of the rack to toast lightly. To assemble the burgers, place slice of mozzarella cheese on top of the bottom bun, place the patty, place sauteed topping, place the two slices of pepperoni, put marinara sauce on the bottom of the top bun and serve. Makes 6 hamburgers.
