No Date Tonight Burger
I incorporated all the ingredients and flavors of a great steakhouse meal. The popular fried onion appetizer, the spinach salad with blue cheese and the bacon wrapped filet topped with a red wine mushroom sauce, and of course, the garlic bread. All my great american steakhouse favorites together in a burger along with a nice glass of wine.
36 oz. (2.25lbs) ground sirloin
1 cup canned fried onion rings, minced
1 clove garlic, minced
1/2 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1/4 cup red wine
2 cups fresh spinach leaves, steams removed, minced
3 oz. Danish Blue cheese,
6 slices ready cooked bacon
2 tablespoons butter
8 oz. fresh mushrooms, sliced
2 tablespoons flour
1 cup beef broth
1/2 cup red wine
1/4 teaspoon cracked black pepper
1 loaf favorite garlic bread, or 2 boxes frozen garlic toast
Mix the ground sirloin, minced fried onions and garlic. Add the Worcestershire sauce and the 1/4 cup red wine. Blend together. Add the minced spinach leaves. Mix well with hands. Shape the beef mixture into 12 equal sized meatballs. Cut the blue cheese into 6 cubes. Wrap each cube of cheese with a slice of bacon. Placed wrapped cheese on top of a meatball, cover with another meatball. Form into a patty making sure to seal in the cheese. Do this for the remaining meatballs making 6 patties.
Preheat grill to 400 degrees. Light side burner and set to medium temperature. In a small saucepan on the side burner, melt the 2 tablespoons butter. Add the mushrooms and sautÃ© until lightly brown. Put the burgers on the grill. To the saucepan, add the 2 tablespoons flour slowly and stirring constantly, mix well until flour becomes thick. Add the beef broth to the pot slowly while stirring, then slowly add the 1/2 cup of red wine. Raise the heat to medium high and bring to a low boil. Stir reduce heat to medium and cover the saucepan. SautÃ© about 20 minutes, or to desired thickness, stirring occasionally. Add the black pepper when done. Check the burgers, 10 minutes on each side for medium, 12 1/2 minutes on each side for medium well, and approximately 15 minutes on each side for well done. Put the garlic bread on the grill and cook according to package directions. If using a loaf of garlic bread, when done, slice into 6 equal portions. To assemble burger, place patty on bread slice, buttered side up top burger with some mushroom sauce, cover the burger with another garlic bread slice, buttered side down. Enjoy!
Makes 6 burgers.
I've prepared this recipe using a food processor to mince my necessary ingredients. My red wine choice was Merlot. This recipe and cooking times were done on a Members Mark gas grill.
