Monte Cristo Revisited Burger

As a young girl, my mom and I spent hours together cooking and creating in the kitchen. One of our favorite things to make were traditional Monte Cristo sandwiches. They were a family favorite and always a big hit. When the I read about the BBB contest, I thought what a great chance for my mom and I to work together to perfect our unique recipes and bounce ideas off of one and another. And why not try and incorporate one of our favorite things into an alternative burger. This contest has allowed me to relive some of my fondest memories and flavors. A unique blend of ingredients that taste great together and remind me of so much more.

Ingredients 

Patties:
3/4 pound ground pork
3/4 pound ground ham
1/2 cup seasoned bread crumbs
1 egg
1/2 cup milk
3 tablespoons honey
1 tsp. salt
vegetable oil for grill
Toppers:
4- 1/4 inch thick slices honey roasted turkey
4- slices swiss cheese
6 sourdough buns
1/3 cup softened butter
1/2 cup raspberry preserves
1/2 cup strawberry preserves

Instructions 

1. Preheat grill to medium-high heat 2. In medium bowl combine pork, ham, bread crumbs, egg, milk, honey, and salt. Using spoon, mix just until ingredients blended. Shape into 6 equal patties, handling the meat as little as possible. 3. Brush grill rack with Vegetable oil. Place the patties on the grill. Do not place patties directly over heat due to the high fat content causing excess flaming. 4. Grill 5-6 minutes. When bottoms light brown flip and continue cooking until both sides lightly browned and meat has reached desired doneness. If using a meat thermometer, internal temperature should reach 160 degrees. 5. Place a slice of turkey and swiss cheese on each patty. Turn heat to Medium-low. Close grill lid and allow patties to continue cooking until cheese is melted. 6. Remove patties from grill and allow to rest on a plate. Brush both sides of bun with butter and place on the grill. Grill until toasted. While buns are grilling, combine the two preserves in a bowl. 7. Remove buns from grill. Place a patty on the bottom half of each bun. Spread a generous amount of preserve mixture on each top and place on patty. 8. Enjoy!
