The lasagna burger is a fully satisfying & delicious meal. You don't even need to worry about side dishes! Served on your favorite fresh focaccia bread, this burger has it all: a hearty beef burger with a filling of ricotta cheese and fresh basil, topped with mozzarella cheese, marinara sauce, & a chiffonade of fresh basil.
1/2 cup ricotta cheese
1/4 cup fresh basil leaves
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
2 1/4 pounds ground beef (85% lean)
2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper
2 tablespoons olive oil (a drizzle for each burger) your favorite focaccia bread, (enough to provide twelve 4" squares)
1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella
1/2 cup chiffonade of fresh basil
1 cup of your favorite marinara sauce
Light your grill & leave it on high to heat up nicely. Place in the bowl of a food processor: ricotta, 1/4 cup fresh basil leaves, egg, 1/2 teaspoon salt & 1/4 teaspoon pepper. Process with blade attachment until smooth & basil is nicely incorporated. Set aside. In a large bowl, using your clean hands, gently mix together: ground beef, Worcestershire sauce, 1 teaspoon salt, & 1/2 teaspoon pepper. Form 12 equal patties. Place about 1 teaspoon of the ricotta filling on the top center of 6 of the patties. Cover the filled patties with the plain patties. Seal the edges by gently pressing with your fingers. Drizzle the top of each burger with olive oil. Use your fingers to spread the olive oil to cover the top of the burger. Place burgers on the grill, olive oil side down. Turn heat down to just a pinch below high. Grill on that side for about seven minutes. Turn (don't flip) burgers 45 degrees. Grill for about 2 more minutes. Peek & check for nice grill marks. If you have nice grill marks, flip your burgers. Top each with a generous pinch of shredded mozzarella. Grill for about six more minutes. (Meanwhile, cut your focaccia bread into 12 squares (about 4 inch squares). If desired, gently warm your focaccia in the upper hanging rack of the grill during the last few minutes of the burgers' cooking. Place each cooked burger on a focaccia square. Top each with a generous pinch of basil chiffonade & a generous tablespoon (or more if you prefer a saucier burger) of marinara. Top with another square of focaccia. Enjoy.
