Greek Gyro Burger

Greek Gyros are traditionally pita sandwiches made with spicey meat shavings off of a big rotating spit. The following is a simpler version.

3/4 cup sour cream
1/4 cup ranch dressing
1/2 cucumber peeled, seeded and finely chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 Tbs fresh dill, chopped
1/4 cup walnuts, chopped
1& 1/2 lbs ground beef
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp lemon-pepper
1/4 cup Sutter Home white wine
1/2 tsp oregano
1/2 cup feta cheese, crumbled
4 Tbs Colavita olive oil
6 flat-bread pitas
2 ripe tomatoes,sliced
1 small red onion, sliced thinly

Pre-heat grill to med-high. To make Tzatziki sauce- Combine sour cream, ranch dressing, cucumber, half the minced garlic, dill & walnuts and mix well. Set aside. To make burgers- In large bowl, combine ground beef with salt, lemon-pepper,wine, oregano and 2 Tbs of the olive oil and feta cheese. Mix just untill all ingredients have been incorporated. Divide into 6 burger patties and grill for 12-15 mins or until thermometer registers 160F. Let Burgers rest while preparing pitas. Brush Pitas with remaining olive oil and heat on Grill just until they soften and get warmed. To assemble the Greek Gyro Burger; slice each burger into four slices on a slant. Arrange burger slices on one half of pita. Top with onions and tomato slices and top with tzatziki sauce. Fold over and serve.

I like to cook the burgers in patty form and slicing diagonally before assembeling. The burgers can also be shaped into long ovals to fit the length of the pita, thus avoiding slicing. Either way, they tastes great.
