Gorgonzola Long Burger

While growing up in the Pacific Northwest, my family always enjoyed stopping at local "hamburger joints’ for a quick meal. Several of these served a "long burger" a rectangular hamburger served on a rectangular bun. It was a great treat to eat that strange shaped hamburger. Adding the flavors of Gorgonzola cheese, avocado, mushrooms, and sweet onions to the long burger has allowed me to enjoy memories of my youth and the adventure of new and different tastes to a family tradition.

Ingredients

Patties
2 ½ lbs ground chuck
2 tablespoons Lea and Perrins Worcester Sauce
1 Large egg
Salt and pepper to taste
4 oz Treasure Cave Gorgonzola Cheese
Avocado spread
2 Large Avocados
4 tablespoons whipped cream cheese
1 tablespoon lemon juice
Sautéed onions and mushrooms
One large Walla Walla sweet onion
20 white button mushrooms without stems
4 tablespoons butter
6 Hoagie Rolls, spit
Olive oil, for brushing on the grill rack

Instructions

Patties
In a large bowl blend the ground chuck, egg, Worchester sauce, gorgonzola cheese, salt, and pepper until thoroughly mixed. Mold the mixture into patties the size of the hoagie rolls. Makes 6 patties. Cover and refrigerate.

Avocado Spread:
Mash the avocados, lemon juice and cream cheee in bowl until the mixture is smooth, small chunks of avocado are fine. Cover and refrigerate.

Onions and Mushrooms
Cut the onions and mushroom into thin strips. In large skillet over medium high heat, add 2 tablespoons butter and onions, cook until the onions are soft and slightly translucent. Drain and set aside. In the same skillet over medium high heat, add 2 tablespoons of butter and mushrooms. Cook until mushrooms are slightly brown. Drain and set aside.

To grill,
Preheat a propane gas grill to medium high, lightly oil the grill rack. Grill patties over medium-high heat, about 6 minutes per side for medium-well. turning once. Be careful not to press the burgers as they cook or they will split open and the cheese will ooze out.
Hollow out the top and bottom of the hoagie roll. Place rolls on the grill for about 2 minutes or until lightly toasted. Remove from grill; add avocado spread to both sides of hoagie roll. Place a patty on the bottom of a hoagie roll, add the mushrooms and onions to the top half of the roll.
Plut both sides together and serve.
