Brushetta Burger

I came up with this recipe while preparing for the National Hamburger Festival Contest in Akron, Ohio. I wanted a light and refreshing summer burger. I am a registered nurse with an interest in healthy eating. I think this burger is both refreshing and healthy.

1 tablespoon olive oil
1/3 cup chopped onion
1/3 cup mild italian peppers
1 tablespoon worcestershire sauce
1 1/4 pound ground chicken
3/4 pound ground turkey italian sausage
1 tablespoon garlic and herb grill seasoning
6 slices provolone cheese
Brushetta Topping
2 cups chopped tomatoes
1/2 cup diced onions
1/2 cup diced mild italian peppers
salt-pinch or two
1 tablespoon olive oil
chopped basil
Whole wheat buns
Spray Butter

1. Prepare brushetta topping by mixing the above ingredients and place off to the side for later use.21. Using a small frying pan, preheat 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Cook chopped onions and peppers. When onions and peppers soften add worcestershire sauce and cook an additional 2-3 minutes on low heat. 3. Mix above onion and pepper mixture to ground chicken and sausage. Add garlic and herb seasoning. 4. Let mixture rest for about 30mintes. 5. Prepare 6 patties. 6. Preheat gas grill to 350-400 degrees. 7. Cook patties for 5-6 minutes on each side (total of 11-12 minutes). 8. Place provolone on top of each burger and melt. 9. Remove burgers from heat and let rest. 10. Spray each side of wheat buns with spray butter and brown on grill. 11. Place burgers on buns and sprinkle with 1/3 cup of brushetta topping. 12. Enjoy

Mixture can be prepared in advance and left in refrigerature to marinate prior to use. The burger can be served with a variety of toppings on the side to please different tastes. You can use turkey italian sausage links and remove the casing.
