From Homegrown Grapes to Sutter Home is a monthly series that explores the journey of our grapes, from our home to yours, and all the great ways Sutter Home wine is served and enjoyed.

This April, Sutter Home’s fresh and easygoing Merlot steals the spotlight with its lush, velvety texture and generous fresh fruit flavors. Ripe black cherry aromas with hints of herbal spice lead to smoky black cherry and spiced plum flavors on the palate.

Our Merlot is crafted from grapes grown in premier vineyards in California’s cool coastal region and warmer inland Lodi, where the fruit ripens slowly and evenly to produce wine that is soft, juicy, and round. The grapes are harvested at peak ripeness and are fermented in stainless steel tanks at cool temperatures to preserve the vivid cherry flavors and aromas. Afterward, the wine is aged briefly in American oak tanks to enhance its supple, silky-smooth texture.

This medium-bodied red has an excellent structure, soft tannins, and round mouthfeel, making it an excellent accompaniment to

herb-roasted meats, tomato-based pastas, plank-grilled salmon, hearty spaghetti Bolognese, and earthy mushroom risotto.

Sutter Home Merlot was made to be enjoyed immediately, so get cozy and get pouring. Serve yours slightly below room temperature to bring out the wine’s genuine lush flavors and aromas. If you’re an avid fan of Merlot, you might also enjoy our Cabernet Sauvignon or Pinot Noir.
