Sometimes we’re anxious to entertain others well, but we don’t do things so nicely when we’re on our own. I recommend selecting lunchtime or evening to treat yourself. Put out a cloth napkin and the nicest china. Pour yourself a glass of wine. Light a candle or put a flower or some other decoration on the table. Put your favorite jazz music on the stereo or stream it from your computer. Take a little picture of the place setting and the different colors on the plate. Send it to yourself in order to give yourself some pleasure and to remind yourself that, every once in while, you deserve a little of the white-glove treatment you often give to guests.
