Hosting an Afternoon Tea Party
The British are famous for their small afternoon meals, most commonly known as Afternoon Tea, or High Tea. While serving tea is not a requirement, small appetizer-sized dishes and refreshing beverages bring British friends and family together for an afternoon gathering.
Barbara’s family in Things I Want My Daughters to Know frequently find themselves enjoying an afternoon Tea, which provides a warm and comforting, yet traditional setting to take a break from the day. British Tea is traditionally served with beautiful presentation. When hosting your own British Tea Party, small decorative details will make your guests feel welcomed and delighted.
Try serving your scones and sandwiches with delicate plate garnishes: thin slices of strawberry and springs of fresh mint. Instead of providing guests with a basic white napkin, go to a craft or party supply store and pick up some decorative napkins in a bright color or a classic print, such as paisley or plaid.
Do you have family silver or China that is collecting dust in a closet? This is the time to break out the good stuff. You can make any Afternoon Tea a little more special by presenting food and wine in a fashion that is out of the ordinary.
