Our Roots

Sutter Home

Humble beginnings, a pioneering spirit, brave hearts and a commitment to making a wine for the people. The Sutter Home family story is an American story, as timeless as it is time-honored. Our heritage dates back three generations to when the Trinchero family left their home in New York to pursue the American Dream in California’s nascent wine industry. Today, we’re proud to be the brand that has introduced more Americans to wine on the table than any other, and our philosophy remains the same: “a great product for a fair price.”

Sutter Home has a rich history of giving wine lovers the delicious products they want, starting with the creation of the original White Zinfandel in the 1970s. Today, with more than 20 crowd-pleasing varieties, there is a Sutter Home wine for everyone, traditional types such as Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot, to more casual wines like Moscato and Sangria.

Sutter Home is the brand generations of wine lovers trust to deliver consistent, award-winning quality and value for every wine occasion. We will forever stand by our promise to create deliciously enjoyable and affordable wines for everyone forging new paths, discovering new frontiers, and living their own version of the American Dream.

Our History

1890

One of the original buildings at Sutter Home

Founded in 1890, the Sutter Home Winery was closed during Prohibition, until new owners reopened it in the late 1940s.

1948

The Trinchero family

In December 1947, the Trinchero family left their home in New York City to chase a dream of starting a new life in California’s nascent wine industry. In 1948, the Trincheros reopened the Sutter Home Winery.

1972

Bob and Roger in 1972.

In 1972, Bob Trinchero experimented with a winemaking technique called “saignée,” draining some of the free-run juice from Zinfandel skins to create a concentrated, robust Amador County Zinfandel.
The runoff Zinfandel juice was then fermented to dryness, creating Sutter Home’s first vintage of White Zinfandel. At the time, it was dry and white in color. Production was just 220 cases.

1975

In 1975, Bob’s 1974 vintage White Zinfandel suffered a stuck fermentation, leaving the wine with a light pink color and about 2 percent residual sugar. Sutter Home’s customers loved this delicious new wine style, and very quickly White Zinfandel became the first wine Sutter Home ran out of each year.

1987

Display cases of Sutter Home wines

In 1987, Sutter Home White Zinfandel became the best-selling premium wine in the United States, growing from 25,000 cases in 1981 to over 4.5 million cases.

1990

Erin Everson receives her Build a Better Burger prize

In 1990, Sutter Home uncorked the wine industry’s most exciting and longest-running retail promotion: Build a Better Burger. It paired America’s favorite wine with America’s favorite food.

1994

In 1994, Wine Spectator gave Bob Trinchero a distinguished service award for “having introduced more Americans to wine on the table than anyone in history.”

2001
